In Defence of Our Lady: Rosary Rallies Against Testament in Dublin

When Faith Demands Action

Irish Society for Christian Civilisation held two public Rosary rallies of reparation outside the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin to protest against Testament, a blasphemous opera based on a libretto by Colm Tóibín. The first rally took place on 8th of October, the night of the opera’s Dublin premiere, and the second on10th of October, during its third performance.

True art elevates the human spirit, communicates beauty, and enkindles a spark of admiration. This so-called opera, however, falls far short of this noble purpose. Beyond its mediocre and postmodern portrayal of sacred events, the opera strikes at the very foundations of the Catholic Faith. It denies the Divine Maternity of Our Lady and the Divinity of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ – truths that Catholics hold most sacred.

As faithful Catholics, we could not allow such blasphemy to pass unnoticed.

In a relatively short period, a group of just six volunteers collected more than 4,000 signatures protesting the opera. They delivered the petition to the management of the Gaiety Theatre. Nevertheless, the performances went ahead. In a society where commercial interests so often prevail over the truth, this outcome was hardly surprising.

Yet a petition’s value cannot be measured only by whether it achieves its stated objective. Petitions also reveal society’s moral convictions and encourage those who remain faithful to the truth. Catholics who feel isolated, surrounded by indifference or hostility, may begin to question their convictions. But such public acts of resistance remind them that they are not alone.

Our message was clear: offences against God and His Blessed Mother must not go unanswered. With righteous indignation, we stood in defence of their honour, echoing in spirit the battle cry of St. Michael the Archangel: “Quis ut Deus?” – (“Who is like unto God?”) In the face of blasphemy, our public prayers became a testimony of fidelity to God and His Mother.

But beyond protesting against an offence to the Faith, our rallies had an even more important purpose: to offer consolation to Our Blessed Mother.

When Our Lady is mocked and offended, how could her faithful children remain indifferent? Catholics gathered outside the Gaiety Theatre beneath the symbolic red standards of the TFP and prayed the complete Rosary (all fifteen decades, comprising the three sets of mysteries) in reparation for the blasphemies committed.

Approximately 100 faithful Catholics joined these public prayers, some travelling from across Ireland, including from as far away as Cork and Cavan. They were united in their desire to console Our Offended Mother, defend her honour, and proclaim the truth to those entering the theatre.

A Ticket Sacrificed for Our Lady

One particularly touching anecdote illustrates how public prayer can reach souls in the most unexpected circumstances.

A young man from the Irish countryside, living about an hour from Dublin, had decided to attend the opera in the hope of enriching himself culturally. Having heard nothing of the controversy surrounding Testament, he purchased a ticket, assuming that an opera dealing with a biblical subject would be something worthwhile.

As he approached the Gaiety Theatre, however, he encountered an unexpected scene. A group of Catholics stood praying the Rosary beneath red standards. Between the decades, their voices rang out:

“Reparation! Reparation! Reparation!”

The repeated cry sounded almost like an angelic call to penance amid the tumult of Dublin’s nightlife.

Recognising some of the participants, the young man thought to himself: “Oh, this is the group I know. I should go over and see what is all the hustle about.”

He approached and soon discovered that the opera he had come to see was an offence against his beloved Mother Mary.

His decision was immediate.

Rather than enter the theatre, he remained outside and joined the faithful in praying all fifteen decades of the Rosary. His ticket went unused, but he had found something far more valuable than an evening’s entertainment: an opportunity to stand in defence of Our Lady.

This simple incident demonstrates the importance of public prayer. Its first and highest purpose is to implore divine intervention, but its influence does not end there. It also touches those who witness it, sometimes visibly and immediately, as in this young man’s case, and sometimes in ways known only to God.

A public Rosary is therefore never merely a gathering of people reciting prayers. It is a profession of Faith, an act of reparation, and a visible testimony that Our Lord and His Blessed Mother have faithful children who will not remain silent when their honour is attacked.

No Sacrifice Is Too Small

We should never underestimate the value of even the smallest sacrifice offered in defence of Our Lady.

Our Beloved Mother, Mediatrix of All Graces, receives these offerings, however imperfect or insignificant they may appear to us, and presents them to Her Divine Son. What seems little in our eyes can become, through her maternal intercession, a beautiful gift before the throne of God, drawing down graces upon the earth.

As the Memorare reminds us, never was it known that anyone who fled to Her protection, implored Her help, or sought Her intercession was left unaided. If Our Lady is so good a Mother, if she never abandons those who turn to her with confidence, how could we remain silent when she is mocked and attacked?

We cannot! And neither should you!
