The annual Call to Chivalry Summer Camp once again brought together young Catholic boys for a week of spiritual formation, friendship, and adventure. Held in the beautiful surroundings of Glencomeragh House, Co. Waterford, the camp offered participants the opportunity to deepen their Faith while enjoying exciting games, inspiring talks, and memorable outings. Throughout the week, the boys were encouraged to develop the virtues of courage, charity, discipline, and leadership in the spirit of Christian chivalry.
Each day began early with the sound of bagpipes, calling everyone to rise and prepare for the day ahead. The daily schedule centred on prayer, with Holy Mass celebrated every day and the Holy Rosary prayed together either in the chapel or outdoors before a statue of Our Lady. Participants also had time for personal prayer and reflection, allowing them to grow closer to God amid the peaceful surroundings of the camp.
The spiritual programme was complemented by a series of engaging talks covering Catholic history, the lives of the saints, Christian civilisation, and the virtues needed to live as faithful Catholics in today’s world. These presentations challenged the boys to think deeply about their Faith and inspired them to imitate the heroism and generosity of great Catholic figures throughout history. The camp’s theme was reflected in every activity, encouraging participants to live with conviction and place God at the centre of their lives.
No Call to Chivalry camp would be complete without its unique games. Every day brought a variety of activities that combined teamwork, strategy, and healthy competition. Popular games such as Shield Ball, Capture the Flag, Treasure Hunt, and French Football kept everyone active and engaged. Sword battles using wooden shields and foam weapons once again proved to be among the highlights of the week, allowing participants to experience the excitement of medieval-style combat while learning the importance of discipline and honour. Chess tournaments and other indoor games provided opportunities for quieter competition, with prizes awarded to the winners.
The camp also included memorable excursions that combined recreation with an appreciation of Ireland’s natural beauty and Catholic heritage. One of the highlights was a visit to Glendalough, Co. Wicklow, where participants explored the ancient monastic settlement founded by St. Kevin and enjoyed the beauty of the surrounding valley. Time spent outdoors also provided a welcome opportunity to appreciate God’s creation while strengthening friendships among the campers.
Evenings were filled with campfires, stories, singing, and conversations that strengthened the sense of brotherhood among the campers. Whether roasting marshmallows, listening to inspiring stories of saints and missionaries, or simply enjoying one another’s company, these moments became lasting memories for everyone present. The excellent meals throughout the week also contributed greatly to the enjoyable atmosphere of the camp.
One of the most meaningful moments of the week was the public Rosary Rally in Dublin, where participants gathered to pray for Ireland, for the protection of life, and for the restoration of the Catholic Faith. Despite the occasional curious onlooker, the boys prayed confidently and reverently, giving public witness to their Faith. It was a reminder that living as faithful Catholics requires both courage and charity.
As the camp drew to a close, the participants gathered for a final banquet to celebrate the friendships formed and the many graces received throughout the week. Although everyone returned home to different parts of the country, they left with renewed determination to live as faithful Catholic young men. The lessons learned through prayer, talks, games, and shared experiences will continue to bear fruit long after the camp has ended.
The Call to Chivalry Summer Camp once again demonstrated that young Catholics are eager to pursue holiness, defend their Faith, and embrace lives of genuine heroism. In a society that often encourages comfort and self-interest, the camp reminded participants that true happiness is found in serving God and striving to become saints. As the familiar camp slogan reminds us, “Youth was not made for pleasure, but for heroism.”
